Jane Addams and Booker T. Washington
Addams larger vision was social democracy. It was a sense that democracy in America is an essential value. It doesn’t just mean being able to vote, but equality for all. How do you promote that? Bye helping those who are outside to integrate. Show the immigrants that they too can be part of America. Give them American style clothes, encourage them to join clubs so they can vote for their officers, have them and their children learn English this way they can get over the feeling of alienation and isolation and begin the process of cultural adaptation. Show the middle class the immigrant is too capable of accomplishment. To show them that they are not threats and that they are American despite difference in culture, language, and material conditions. In order for American democracy to work, it can’t be based on one group excluding another group; it must be based on all groups working together cooperating. It means that she must question or reject the older American creed of individualism. She would like it if everyone could succeed and make it on their own. She tells people that they do have to have their own individual responsibilities. Hull-house is full of programs to enforce responsibility. You don’t go into
BTW taught the students from the very beginning to do not only the domestic and agricultural work, but also to have them construct their own buildings. He taught them the best methods of labor “so that the school would not only get the students themselves would not only get the students themselves would be taught to see not only utility in labour, but beauty and dignity”. Hull-house is not a school in which they check students to see who brushed their teeth as BTW did in Tuskegee. At Hull-house people go and work there voluntarily. There is a better chance of coming up with solutions with for social problems. Hull house engages in a series of social investigations. Jane Addams writes in magazines. Jane Addams wasn’t making public housing, she was developing housing codes so landlords wont take advantage of the liberties they use to have with no codes. Now they need a certain amount of windows, fire exits, and a fire escape. Rooms and apartments must be a certain size for a limited amount of people and some indoor plumbing was required. This overall did manage to help some people. BTW was telling people to take responsibility not only as individuals but also as a race and then ultimately succeeding in America by adopting the dominant values. People immigrated from all over Europe into the United States. For Addams this movement isn’t a bad thing, but a good thing. For Addams in many ways, her culture is superior to others but they do have things to contribute. Immigrants have rights that say that once they’re in America, they should be excluded. They should be integrated._______________________________________________.
