Analyze the main character in “A pair of tickets”-Amy Tan

The first time I read “A pair of tickets” which was written by Amy Tan, I felt sorry for with Jing-mei’s mother. The second time I read, I found it had more than a sorrow story. The writer was successful in creating the main character-Jing mei. With the first person narrator, Amy Tan took readers on the trip coming back China. During the trip, readers follow step by step the changing of Jing mei’s feeling, the way she thought and the way of her behavior.

“Cannot be help... Once you are born Chinese, you cannot help but feel and think as a Chinese” [par.2] This is not only the main issue of the story, but also the reason why Jing mei wonder during the trip of her coming back China. The first time she entered Shenzhen, she felt something changing inside her body. She could felt them, very clearly and she found she became Chinese. In the past, she had never thought she was Chinese. She was American. She born and grew up in the US, so why could she be a Chinese. The reason why she denied her roof is because of her mother. She thought that her mother Chinese reflect by her mother, Chinese that she embarrassed. “... I saw myself... combination for winter clothes.” [par.4] She wanted to be a Caucasian, not a Chinese.

The story of her mother made Jing mei exhausted. She could not sleep. “I lay awake thinking about my mother’s story... griving that my sisters and I had lost her.” [par.133] This is the first time in her life, she thought so much about her mother. Deep inside Jing mei, the love for mother started rising. She thought about life and death. All of her feeling was contrite.

And after years, she started to ask. She wanted to know how to pronounce her sisters’ names. She wanted to know what her mother and her name meant. And maybe, this was the first time she felt sorry with her mother. “I think about this... how disappointed my mother must have been.” [par. 95] And she refused her father’s telling told the story about her mother in English. With this, she deeply became a Chinese.

The meeting took place in the station with a warm welcome from her Chinese relatives. But Jing mei didn’t feel comfortable. She was afraid of them, afraid because Chinese people weren’t didn’t like her imagination. “They are both crying openly... how awkward it will feel.” [par.46] China and Chinese people in her mind were not like this. The Chinese like her mother “haggling with store owner, pecking her mouth with toothpick in public.” The Chinese that when her mother said she would become made her “I saw myself transforming like a werewolf.” But at that moment, China under her eyes was different and looks like the US. “From a distance, it looks like a major American city... field day her,
