Our day out

I have just read and a play by Willie Russell, ‘Our Day Out’. In this play the character Briggs changed. I thought this character was a strict teacher who wasn’t fond of children and didn’t like to have any fun.

Our Day Out is about a progress class from Liverpool going on a trip to Wales with their teacher, Mrs. Kay. Mr. Briggs, the depute headmaster, decides to go along on the trip to keep an eye on things. The class do things, not deliberately, to make Mr. Briggs angry. After an experience with one of the main characters, Carol, he relaxes and enjoys the rest of the day, but only to come back to be his old strict self again. The main characters are Carol, she is a girl from the progress class who is quite close to Mrs. Kay, another main character. She is the head teacher of the progress class. And another main character is Mr. Briggs, the depute headmaster.

When I first read about Mr. Briggs I thought he was very judge-mental who doesn’t care what people think of him, even though in some cases that is a good thing.

“She reminds me of a mother hen rather than a teacher…”

He is probably a very strict teacher that pupils might fear. He also seemed like a man that would suck up to the headmaster so he c

Briggs Changed after having the experience with Carol on the cliff, he understood some of the kids now and why they misbehaved. And because he understood, the rest of the trip he was able to enjoy himself with the children. The children seemed to like the new Briggs as much as they liked the other teachers. I thought that Briggs was more lively when he was happy instead of always angry.

“it’s a shambles, the whole ill-organized affair! Look at what they

Mr. Briggs changed quite a few times in the course of the play but every time he did change, something would make him go back to being strict again. I think he was right to want the kids to behave, but that was not the right way to do it. I also think that Briggs wasn’t very fair at the zoo, he could have listened to the children’s story before he lost trust in them so quickly. When he enjoyed himself, I liked him best because you saw a whole different side to him, and he was a lot nicer and livelier.

As soon as the class saw that Mr. Briggs was coming on the trip the whole coach load just sighed because they knew that Mr. Briggs would have very different ideas of how to approach things on the trip. There is a contrast between Mrs. Kay and Mr. Briggs, of how they teach, how they want to organize the trip and how they feel towards the children. Mr. Briggs thinks that the trip should be his kind of fun, which is looking at scenery and other simple things like that. But Mrs. Kay, she thinks that the kids should enjoy themselves and shouldn’t be scared to have fun with Mrs. Kay.

“Play your cards right, and I might take for a ride on the waltzer!”
