William Wallace – Fighter of Peace
Mel Gibson’s brilliant 1995 patriotic epic Braveheart follows the ups and downs of William Wallace, an everyday Scottish peasant in the 13th century. The plot revolves around the quest of Wallace on a journey for the freedom of his country. William Wallace is played by Mel Gibson himself. This allows him to portray Wallace in anyway he likes. In doing this, he constructs Wallace as a patriotic and loyal fighter who wants to rid his land of the English, and free Scotland. After the killing of his wife Murron by an English lord, Wallace declares war against the English. The plot thickens later in the film When the Scottish nobles cross over, and join the English in a bid to capture Wallace. This fuels Wallace’s already growing rage for revenge, as he seeks out to kill the unworthy nobles. The viewer’s first impression of Wallace is in a small village in Scotland. The backdrop of green mountains and pasty grey skies creates a peaceful setting and positions the viewer to think positively of him. Wallace lives with his older brother and father and is a young boy. Wallace’s father is a stereotypical Scottish father figure, strong and tall and is an obvious influence on young William. No emphasis is placed on the relationship
The viewer also comes to see Wallace as the patriotic freedom fighter. His love for his country is highlighted when he takes charge of his nation’s army, and defeats the English in a seemingly impossible situation. Gibson has filmed the scene to convey Wallace’s leadership qualities, and to also illustrate his never say die attitude. Fittingly this scene is shot on location, and gives the viewer an intricate insight into what actually happened on the battlefield with William Wallace. Eye level camera shots are used here, as well as tracking shots as the two armies sprint at each other to again put the viewer there on the battlefield with Wallace. Wallace is seen in many shots standing tall killing many English men, while still maintaining his leadership role, and commanding the separate regiments of his country’s army. The scene is heavily lit with natural light, and is set during midday. With the Scottish winning the battle under Wallace’s leadership, the Scottish nobles knight him. Mel Gibson’s theme of Wallace’s loyalty to his country is expressed throughout the film. It is symbolized when Wallace is wed to Murron, secretly as to not follow the English law. It is reinforced later in the film when the Scottish nobles are offered money and change sides to the English, and he seeks them out and kills some of them. Once Wallace is established as a great leader and warr
