Modern Day Terrorism- Possable Attacks

What is war? Is it a battle? Is it struggle? What is war defined as? Well, for a debater it may be outsmarting the opposition with words. For an environmentalist it may be saving that last tree. For a traffic control officer it may be his constant battle with the traffic. However war is generally described as conflict between parties, whether it is between countries, people or ideas. The “war” in Iraq is a war of America vs. Iraq or America vs. Saddam Hussein (who, because of his dictatorship, could be known as Iraq because of his control of the country). The “war” on terror is a war against terrorists or more specifically, their extremist ideology. Although one could argue that both “wars” are based on the fact that both parties do things that are considered wrong, to those parties it appears that they are doing the right thing for themselves. To a terrorist, their sacrifice for the “cause” (whatever that may be) may be justified to them because they are doing what they think is right. Years of injustice towards a community, personal torment, radical beliefs and many other factors push people to the line that separates the common criminal from the terrorist. Common criminals do things for their own benefits like r

Although it was once chemical warfare that was feared the most, biological warfare is now starting to become a very real and very dangerous reality. The Anthrax scare in America recently was nothing compared to what could really happen. One scenario that has been explored is that a genetically engineered version of the Ebola virus would be spread simultaneously through airborne means at conventions in a country. Then, when all the business representatives and their prospective buyers returned to their homes, they would spread the virus through means such as respiration and sexual contact. Weeks later, a national epidemic would result, killing thousands, if not millions of people, while the terrorists get away clean because of the delayed effect they engineered into the virus. Although normal Ebola virus is not airborne, there is a suspected airborne sub-strain called Ebola Mayinga, which is named after a nurse died from it through unknown means. Ebola also has a morality rate of 80%, which means that you have a 2 in 10 chance of surviving it. A genetically engineered version could have a morality rate of up to 95%. If that reality doesn’t scare you perhaps this will. There are ZERO cures for any viral contractions. Nothing would prevent such an attack and with no cure, the virus and the people affected would only be able to be contained, not cured. The good news is that Ebola is an extremely rare disease that is found in Africa and it takes a lot of time, resources and expertise to engineer such a virus.

WP: So anyone can find out how to make them?

In the 19th century, certain people and countries began to use systematic terrorism to bring about social or political change. Dissidents in different parts of Europe used terror as a weapon in their push for independence and revolution. It was during the 1970s and 80s that the world saw a rapid escalation in terrorist activity. Terrorism became a growth industry with a host of bombings, hijackings and assassinations. In the decade of the 70s, there were 8100 terrorist incidents worldwide. In the 1980s there were 31,000 incidents - with 70,000 people killed. There's a long list of terrorist actions, but some caught our attention in a very big way. Like the 1988 bombing of Pan Am flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland where 270 people lost their lives (December 21). And the 1995 bombing of the Federal Building in Oklahoma City, which left 168 people dead and hundreds more injured (April 19).
