Effects and Need to Counter Media Violence

The amount of violence that is portrayed in the media is overwhelming.

In all the newspapers, magazines, radio and television broadcasts, films and Internet sites, violence is the most often shown and recurring theme.

Many television programs, the most popular form of media, contain violence in one form or another. In fact, 61% of all television programs feature violence and violent acts. These images however do not often show the effects violence has on victims, and they glamorize the users of violence in almost half of violent acts. Perpetrators of violence have qualities that make them attractive to viewers, especially children.

Children and young adults listen to music and watch television in extremely large quantities. The average American child watches 3-4 hours of television daily and the average American teenager listens to 10,500 hours of music during the span of 7th and 12th grade. Before they reach 18, the average American sees simulated murders on television reaching the tremendous quantity of 18,000. Youths often view content that is not intended towards them. Musicians and actors are the influence of a number of children and many of these celebrities promote a negative or destructive image.


Preventing the bad effects from the viewing of media violence is both possible and necessary. The main people concerned about children are their parents. Thus, they must do more to limit the amount of violence children are exposed to. Getting to know what programs are on television or what music is being listened to is an absolute necessity. If children due to adult’s involvement do not view potentially harmful media, then the harmful, negative effects will never reach them. Denouncing bad material by parent’s or even concerned citizens will help the youth of the nation. The United States contains more violence than any other industrialized nation and it also has the largest number of young men in prison. The leading cause of death for some young parts of America is homicide. Parents have the first and last responsibility when it comes to their children, and the greatest influence.

Long-term and consistent exposure to violence in the media causes large changes among one’s social and physical behavior. The way in which violence is shown creates risks and problems. Punishment due to violent acts is uncommon in the media, adding to a more dangerous view of the world. All the news media telling of violent acts and all the onscreen images gives people a greater fear of violence affecting them. Desensitization occurs from seeing many violent acts.
