J.D. Salinger, or Jerome Davis Salinger, was born in New York City in 1919 to Jewish Sol Salinger and the Irish-Catholic Miriam Jillich Salinger. Salinger did not have a good relationship with his father partly because he was the cause for him being half Jewish and that was a foundation of dispute for him. He did however have a very good relationship with his mother (Morrill, J.D. Salinger).

In 1932, Salinger enrolled in the elite McBurney School and was known as standoffish and unexceptional student academically. In 1936 he graduated from the Valley Forge Military Academy at which he served as literary editor of the senior yearbook and began to compile his first stories. J.D. Salinger, the author of The Catcher in the Rye, took experiences from his own life to write the novel. It is very evident that much of the story was inspired by actual things he went through or witnessed. This novel was very crucial for Salinger, considering that it gave him most of the reputation that he has today.

The Catcher in the Rye is heavily praised and criticized. The adolescence and repetitive nature of Holden Caulfield is one of the main themes of the novel that is heavily criticized. One person said that with this being a long novel, one may “grow weary of a character such as Holden” (Lomazoff). I agree with this statement. Even from reading just the first couple chapters, I began to get sick of how much Holden complained and just viewing everything from the same way he saw life. There are also good things about his book. Paul Engle, a Chicago Tribune reviewer, stated that the novel was “emotional without being sentimental, dramatic without being melodramatic, and honest without simply being obscene.” Many people also think that the novel is very engaging with several twists and turns, but more importantly, the “unique story of a unique child” (Lomazoff).

J.D. Salinger got serious about his writing career while attending Columbia University. The first of his short stories appeared in several well-known magazines. He was inspired to write by his short story writing professor as well as events from his own life (Jerome).
