Looking Backward by Edward Bellamy

How would you feel if one day you woke up and you were in a completely different world from what you were used to? I know that it would be tough for me and it would take a lot of getting used to before I was comfortable with it. If I were to be placed in a world like the one described in Bellamy’s book my life would be completely different. I think some of the main things that I would have to get used to in my life would be school, school activities, family life, social life, and how I would react to my new lifestyle.

There are many different careers that I could go in to, but I think my first choice would be teaching. In our society today teachers don’t get the credit they should or get paid like they should. If you are a teacher in Bellamy’s world you are getting paid the same as everyone else and it would be a great way to influence young people. Teachers in our society have to deal with kids being rude and sometimes out of control. They are expected to shape kids into the leaders of the future, but sometimes they have to deal with kids who just create trouble and don’t really care about school. When teachers have to deal with this it affects the kids that reall

I know that most of my friends in high school were more interested in sports than they were in their studies and that is one of the reasons that most of them did not have that great of GPA’s. If all of my friends would have grown up in a world like Bellamy describes I’m sure they would all have great GPA’s because they would not have sports taking up all of their free time. I know one of the reasons that I would slack off on my schoolwork was because I was so busy with sports after school that I would not have any time to really focus on my studies. Sometimes I would not even get home from out of town games until eleven or twelve o’clock at night and by that point I was way too tired to do any homework. In Bellamy’s world I would probably participate in a school activity an hour a day for a couple days a week and that would be it so I would have much more time to sit down and do my homework. Getting an education would be my focus when I went school and this would help me to achieve my greatest potential in academics.

Going to school just for an education would be something that would be hard for me to get used to. In Bellamy’s world there really is no competition so that would change my school life drastically. All through high school I was involved in sports and other activities and they all involved competition. I was constantly busy going to sporting events all through the year so even though I was in school for an education schoolwork was never really my top priority. In Bellamy’s book it said that they still played games and sports, but it was just for fun and there was no real competition. I don’t see why people would even have fun playing sports if there was no competition. I’m sure if I grew up in Bellamy’s world schoolwork would be my focus instead of sports and I would spend a lot of my free time studying. Instead of sports I would probably be involved in more extra-curricular activities that were for educational purposes so that I would have something to do and be able to be involved in school outside of classes.

I think that it would be a pretty boring life in the world that Bellamy describes. In Bellamy’s world they raise kids to not be lazy, and if there is something to be done they will do it and it seems like once they get their stuff done they don’t really have anything to do. I think it would be hard to find things to do all the time and I think that I would get bored really quick. My life now is so busy that I can hardly find time to do all the things that I need to accomplish. It seems like th
