Anton Chekhov “The Lady with the Dog
Anton Chekhov in “the Lady with the Dog,” brilliantly displays the quest of one man to find happiness. Through his main character, Dmitri Dmitrich Gurov, Chekhov is able to show how a man can be held back from the very freedoms in life by society and its laws and institutions. In order for Gurov to be free and find his ultimate happiness, he must free himself by the very restraints society has inflicted upon him. Society and its regulations and ideals have confined Gurov to an inescapable doom of self-pity. He is a man who is incapable of exercising his freedom to find happiness. Early in his life he was held back by society and its institution of marriage. He said that “he was talked into marrying in his second year at college,” an example of his inability to act as he wishes (Chekhov 1286). Also he was made to spend his life with a woman who he considers to be “shallow, narrow minded, and dowdy” (Chekhov 1286). The depression of being with a person who you neither love nor care about took a great toll on Gurov. The marriage put Gurov in a cage where he was unable to live his life as he wanted, therefore restricting him from living at all. The marriage underlied many difficulties in his life, it even cr
After a long and frustrating life, Gurov finally finds happiness with Ana Sergeyevna, a woman he encounters in Yalta and has an affair with. This happiness finds Gurov almost too late, it comes when “his hair was already beginning to turn gray,” when he was becoming an old man (Chechov 1297). This was a woman whose caresses were sincere, and did not deal with “unnecessary talk,” she was a woman who truly loved him for who he was, not the person he made himself become because of society (Chekhov 1288). She believed him to be “good, remarkable, high-minded,” a man of worth (Chekhov 1291). This was truly the happiness that he longed for, a woman who loved him for who he was. Even though he found his bliss through Anna, both of them knew that society and the rules that they were under would not allow them to be togther. Gurov made the realization that the relationship between them would either have to end or he would die trying to keep it. She was a mere child thrown into a world of maturity she could not handle. Also during this time, divorce was not common and looked down upon. It was very uncommon to see a marriage being split up and much less being separated. It would be outlandish if Anna were divorce from her husband, as well as Gurov leaving his wife for another. Due to society and its rules, Ana and Gurov would have to spend their days together in secrecy. Gurov will never have the ability to
