High school dropouts in Ameirca
“Education is an ornament in prosperity and a refuge in adversity”. Aristotle.Education is the key to the development in any area of an individual’s life and to pertain to all-important aspects. I seem to believe that the mind of today’s generation are from all aspects, no less creative than those of Einstein, or for that matter, any person who we might look up to for their intelligence or creativity. Then why is the drop out rate in high schools so high? Why do the students dropout? Poverty, lack of parental guidance, or is it the rebellion factor? Personal problems affecting students seem to be the main cause for students to drop out of high school. The presence of a child seems to be the main personal problem facing dropout students, especially in women. Nearly half of the dropout’s students, both male and female, have children or are expecting one. Marriage is another great personal factor that affects the dropout rate. Marriage is a very stressful factor for any student. This stress could and does send many students to the point where they have too much to deal with. School becomes a second priority and is often discarded to lighten the load married couples deal with. Most of the dropouts are married.
Dropping out of high school is one of the common issues faced by many teens today. It results from few main common causes, and the most important one is the lack of inspiration or motivation from the parents. "If you want to know why some students drop out, look at their parents-they pass their low aspirations on to their kids.” (Black 1) Lack of proper parenting creates a kind of emptiness in student life, and they try to fill that emptiness by making wrong kind of friends. These friends spoil students innocent minds by introducuing them to drugs, gangs, and unsafe sex. One consequence after getting involved in drugs and gangs are like being kicked out of school. Why should the schools kick out the students for drug related charges instead there should be a separate section to deal with such students? Schools should provide such students with counseling and guide the students towards making their lives better. I think the teachers at school can also motivate the students towards better life. I think if the teachers and parents work together, they can make a great difference in life of a student. Can parents destroy children’s life? Yes. Sibling comparison could be considered as one of the main reasons for dropping out from school. (Castaneda, Raul 1) Why are the Hispanic youth are blamed? The reason is simple immigration to United States, and lack of proper parenting. Castaneda says “We are unfortunately getting caught up in America’s materialistic and selfish way of life, while the structure of the family suffers.”(1) The pace of life if compared in Mexico and U.S. is completely different, and students find it difficult to adjust the changes in the life and the surrounding environment. They cannot balance the changes in lifestyle, and tend to sway from their originality and adopt the Americanized life, which I feel is the main cause for them to drop out from the school. Parents should encourage their child by highlighting the importance of education. Another personal aspect for dropping out from school is teenage pregnancy. Pregnancy at an early age causes instability and disillusion in life and consequently shattering of dreams. Teenage mothers cannot handle a child and school simultaneously, so they drop school and take up a job to support the child. There are many programs being run by the government to decrease the rate of high school dropout in teenage mothers. I do not think that they are as efficient as they should be, and the drop out rate constantly increases. In spite of Yes, it can to some extent. The dropout rate is high in case of Hispanic students. Hispanic youth tend to dropout from the school and find jobs to support large families or fulfill their desires. For instance a high school drop out may get a job as a life guard on the beaches of California, and the amount he earns might look sufficient to him/ her so they may never come back to school. “Today's Hispanic youth is heavily criticized for the alarming rate of high school drop outs, gangs, violence, and teenage pregnancies.” Most students who dropped out of school did not like school to begin with. These students were failing as it was. They could not keep up with their schoolwork. They did not get along with their teachers and/or other students. They may have had disciplinary problems. Great portions of dropout students were suspended at one time or another. Frequently absent students also make them more likely to drop out. A good deal of dropout
