Radio
The radio is a piece of technology that has profoundly influenced the human condition because it allows people to communicate to each other from great distances and far away places. Radio has helped revolutionize the way communication is today by influencing other pieces of technology like walkie-talkies, cell phones, and other forms of wireless communications. I think that the radio has had a huge impact in our society and our way of life. The radio was invented on December 12, 1901 by an Italian Inventor named Guglielmo Marconi when he was trying to improve upon the telegraph. “Marconi has been called the Father of Radio.”1 He was listening through earphones when he heard a faint sound that sounded like it was making the letter “s” in Morse code. He later then tried it again by sending the “s” across the Atlantic Ocean. “I now felt for the first time absolutely certain that the day would come when mankind would be able to send messages without wires,” he wrote, “Not only across the Atlantic but between the farthermost ends of the Earth.”2 Marconi tried selling his idea to the Italian, but they said that they didn’t want any part of it. Convinced by his family that he had a great idea, he went to
The radio was extremely useful in war situations I thought. Communication with radios began in World War I and has been used in all of the wars in the 20th and 21st century. The wars probably would have lasted longer if there were no radios. Without it, they wouldn’t be able to transmit war plans, locations of enemies, etc. The technologies we use in war are really advanced. The radios that they have can transmit voice signals from a great distance. They can also be as small as a dime or even smaller. Digital satellite radio provides the listener with crystal clear radio reception from far away locations. Digital radios can be installed into cars, where listeners can tune into radio station from across the nation. I am a big fan of radio on the Internet, because it is my only connection to music without having to buy CD’s and not having the capability to download songs. It also provides me with a bunch of unknown bands and new music. I haven’t really got into the digital radios yet. “It will take years to work out the details, says the National Science Foundation’s Cozzens. But when that happens, he expects a host of societal benefits. Among them: better crisis management through videoconferencing that would put workers at the scene in instant contact with experts, telemedicine that can save patients from a distance, and more sophisticated education for rural schools that lack the Internet capacity for multimedia and instantaneous two way interactions.”13 A big turning point for the radio was when in 1912, a distress came from the Titanic. Wireless stations on the East coast of the United States received the signal. One of the recipients was David Sarnoff. “Sarnoff heard a signal, “S.S. Titanic ran into iceberg. Sinking Fast.”6 From then on, many people had new views of the radio and its usefulness. Congress even passed a legislation saying that there had to be a radio and radio operators on every ship. Once again the radio has been proven as a useful piece of technol
