Mr. Shiftlet can be compared to the prince in “Cinderella,” when he marries Lucynell. Mr. Shiftlet simply shows up at a house in the middle of nowhere, starts working for this family and in the end marries the woman’s handicapped daughter. Mr. Shiftlet is different than the prince because Shiftlet walks down Lucynell’s lane in the middle of nowhere, while the prince shows up on a horse and sweeps his bride off her feet. In a way I see Mr. Shiftlet as sneaky, it seems to me that he takes advantage of a good situation. He knows that the mother will end up wanting him to marry her daughter and therefore works for her so that when he does, he will have a lot more than he does when he first walks to the house. I think he has a plan, much different than the prince’s in “Cinderella.” The prince is simply looking for a wife to become his princess, it is his birthday and he has to choose someone.
