Gambling

Why can some people occasionally buy a lottery ticket or play a slot machine and suffer no ill effects beyond losing a few bucks, while others become so gambling obsessed that they risk their savings, their jobs, and their relationships with loved ones? One answer may lie in our genes. There are genetic factors that increase the probability of developing gambling problems. This addictive disorder can lead to life altering circumstances. A gamblers boundaries exist as limitless and suggests a vulnerability that can within the blink of an eye dramatically shape the rest of their lives.

Gambling is a problem in many places and is usually found in casinos, or among its illegal form of betting on sports. The truth remains that not only adults gamble, but kids and teens do it as well, even though it's not as obvious. Gambling can cause you to go broke and can make you start stealing money. It can also lead to doing things like skipping school and wasting precious time and money. At times gambling can just lead to more gambling- such as chasing. “Chasing is when you gamble to try and win back money.” (Lowe). It is done a lot in poker and especially when betting on sports. When a gambler is down a large sum of money their m

Problem gambling is treated through groups such as Gamblers Anonymous or counseling sessions that can be received at The Center for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH). Offered are various types of therapy with or without medications. “At the moment studies have shown that only the antidepressant Luvox and a type of cognitive therapy which involves teaching gamblers improved social, problem-solving, and relapse-prevention skills prove to be effective.” (“camh”). CAMH centers are open as a non profit organization where the individual can be ensured the state of privacy with any information disclosed. My personal experience with CAMH was somewhat of an abbreviated visit. I took it upon myself to meet with a counselor and discuss how I had reached the bottom barrel due to my gambling problems getting so out of hand. I have nothing but kind words to say about those employed at CAMH as they helped me get back onto my feet within weeks and would recommend that any individual in need of some guidance, or someone to steer them in the right path immediately seek some sort of counseling.

Even though the Bible does not directly address gambling, we can derive a number of principles from Scripture. “Coveting, greed, and selfishness are the base emotions that entice us to gamble.” (Lowe 32). Christians should be concerned about gambling if for no other reason gambling is a major cause of family neglect. Many of the social costs associated with gambling come from its mindset. As people get caught up in a gambling frenzy, they begin to neglect their families. Money spent on lottery tickets or at horse tracks is frequently not just leisure money but is income that should be spent on family needs. In “1 Timothy 5:8” it says that a person who refuses to care for his family is worse than an infidel. Parents must provide for their children (2 Cor. 12:14) and eat the bread of their labors (2 Thess. 3:12). “When gambling is legalized, it causes people to neglect their God- mandated responsibility to care for their families, and these families often end up on welfare. Gambling undermines the moral foundations of society and invites corruption in our lives.”(Lowe 33).

Although sports gambling is illegal, there has been a push over the last few years to legalize it. One concern is how sports gambling has affected the integrity of the game. Illegal gambling has already adversely affected sports; legalizing it would simply make matters worse. One issue revolves around how sports betting is done. Betting is done against a point spread. A team is picked to win by so many points. I have been surprised at how much the point spread has become a part of the game. Sporting events have become so much more competitive at which people in the stands would be disappointed that their team did not beat the point spread. Even though their team won, some of the fans were upset that they did not defeat the team by enough points to cover the spread. True fans are concerned if the team wins or loses. “Gamblers, however, are concerned with whether the team was able to beat the point spread.” (Lowe 62). Winning by one point is not enough if the point spread was three. Sportswriters and sports broadcasters routinely announce that a team is favored by a certain number of points. They argue that reporting such information is appropriate because it is relevant to the game. But is it? I believe that when the headlines of a newspaper boldly state, “Denver Broncos favored by 6 points,” they have gone far beyond merely reporting about a sporting event and are actually promoting sports gambling. Sports gambling has affected sports by introducing organized crime
