Topic: Race and Gender in American Culture My Subject for this essay is Kurt B. Kurt is a sophomore here at The University at buffalo and is majoring in aerospace engineering. Kurt is also one of my team mates on the Bulls swim team. I chose Kurt because of his strong knowledge of what race and gender mean to him personally in American culture and also for his strong German heritage and background. Kurt is also a bright student and dedicated and motivated athlete. Kurt is from a small town called Mexico in New York and came to UB to experience a top class education and also to pursue his swimming. The next few paragraphs are Kurt’s responses to questions asked by me regarding race and gender from his personal point of few as an American and a little bit from his German background. All information is based on personal experience or opinions. Kurt’s definition of race is the regional origin of an individual’s family. I also learnt that there are more than a number of races here in the United States. I having grown up in India where discrimination between different types of races exists to the maximum amounts was curious to know if there was any discrimination here in the United States. Acco
Talking about gender, Kurt believes that everyone should have equal opportunity without taking gender into affect or rather disregarding gender. Kurt gives me an example of athletic programs are run or organized in most universities. From what I learn most athletic programs look for an equal ration of men to women. Some people might agree with this theory but others don’t. This sort of proportionality theory does not exist in the field of engineering, art etc. Again the past ha set examples for this proportionality between men and women. I asked Kurt if there was any discrimination between men and women from a more financial aspect, because there is a lot of discrimination between men and women when it comes to finances in India. Men are paid higher salaries then women are, these trends are beginning to change now and differ from the past but still exist. Kurt believes that sexism should be demolished. He believes that a small part of this discrimination still exists but only very minuscule amount. If a man and women apply for the same job and the woman has more credentials and higher qualifications, she most definitely will get the job. If something like this happened in India there would be a lot of unwanted things said. But according to Kurt, in the classic American family the man is still pictured or plays the role of the bread winner. The woman is a better nurturer and care giver as compared to the man.
