The Pentecost
The religion of Christianity is centered on its association to the birth, crucifixion, resurrection, ascension and return of Jesus Christ. The Christian movement had been initiated during the ministries of John the Baptist and Jesus of Nazareth. However, there was a vital turning point of events that caused a dramatic and rapid beginning for this religion. It seemed as if this religion began to spread like wild fire. That was the period following the resurrection of Jesus Christ (Online, Jackson).First, I am going to explain the significant role the Pentecost played in the spreading of Christianity. To fully explain the significance of the Pentecost I am going to briefly discuss the time between the resurrection and ascension of Jesus Christ. This was a period of forty days. Jesus spent those forty days with his disciples speaking to them of the Kingdom of God and told them that they would be “…baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now” (Acts 1:5). Jesus further explained, “… you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be my witness in Jerusalem, in all of Judea, and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth” (Acts 1:8). Then Jesus ascended upon the heavens (HCSB,2058-2059).
“…devoted themselves to the teachings and fellowship of the Apostles and to the breaking of the bread and Prayer”. “…All who believed were together and head all things in; they would sell their possessions and goods and distribute the proceeds to all, as any had need” (Acts 2:42,44). To answer this question the Apostle Peter stood with the other eleven apostles as their spokesmen and addressed the crowd by delivering a sermon. He explained the fulfillment of the oracle given in the Old Testament through the prophet Joel, that God made good his promises to Israel, that he would pour out his spirit on to all people; before the messianic judgment would occur. He further explained that Jesus was the messiah promised by the Lord. He was sent to the people to give them foreknowledge of what was to come. “…exalted at the right of God, he was received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit and has poured out this that you now see and hear (Acts 2:33). Peter further spoke of the workings of God and his responsibility in the making of Jesus who the people crucified, Lord and Christ. The people whom heard what Peter had said to them were cut to the heart and asked Peter “… What should we do?” (Acts 2:37) Peter’s reply was you
