Abortion: a gift or curse to society

“Abortion a gift or a curse to society?”

In exploring this question I will consider three main criteria that have been debated since abortion was legalised in Britain since 1967. I will consider when life begins, human rights of the mother and the child and lastly if abortion has been justified by the impact that it has had on society.

Many people would straight away say that any advancement in medicine is good, but sometimes it is not. You only have to look at other inventions such as the atomic bomb to realise that advancement is not always good.

Abortion is permitted under certain conditions in Scotland, England and Wales. The legislation which governs abortion in these regions is the Abortion Act 1967 and the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act 1990. Abortion is allowed if there is a risk to the life of the mother, the mother may suffer injury to her mental or physical health. That there is a risk to her existing children or that there is a strong chance that the child may suffer from serious mental or physical abnormalities. The baby has to be aborted before 24 weeks if the reason for abortion is risk to the mother’s health or risk to her existing children. This, however, only applies to tho

I believe in pro-choice because I think that women should be able to control their own bodies and decide what is right for their lives and when they want to have a baby. It is all right to be pro-life but I don’t think it is right to impose your views on to everyone else. I believe that it is wrong to abort a baby after twenty-four weeks because the baby could be born then and live independently outside the mother. As far as human rights are concerned I think that the health of the mother depending on her circumstances should always come before the life of the unborn embryo.

Pro-choice is the name given to those who believe that abortion should be legal and freely available to those women who wish to terminate their pregnancy. One of the main pro-choice groups is The National Abortion Campaign. It believes that it is a woman’s right to decide what to do if she is pregnant and it is involves in promoting its view through writing pro-abortion literature and asking politicians to represent its opinions. Its opinions are: that an embryo is a cluster of cells, which is a potential human being, not an actual person. That each woman should have the right to terminate her pregnancy if she wishes. Abortion should be legal in order to prevent dangerous and unhygienic ‘back-street’ abortions. That an expectant mother may realise that the task of raising a child would be unbearable and it should be available for women under extreme circumstances for exa
