Textils clothing footwear and allied industries
The Australian TCFL Industry has had a number of changes in the past three centuries. In the early 19th century, up to the 1860’s, Australia’s textile industry existed mainly in NSW and could not really be considered to have been of any significance. This was largely due to the small population, which could not sustain any significant textile manufacturing. Australia was seen largely as a producer of raw materials. Mills and other textile manufacturing establishments flourished briefly and then faded from the scene. During the 19th century Australia’s greasy wool production increased and a wool textile industry slowly developed. Victoria was the first to develop a wool textile industry and became Australia’s wool manufacturing centre. Australia’s wool textile industry
After WWII there was a big demand for man made fibres in Australia and man-made fibre manufacturing plants were established. Many efforts were made, mainly government financial incentives, to develop a cotton growing industry from the 1850’s onward, although successful cotton growing was only achieved from the 1960’s. The 19th century was a period of massive industrialisation. Cottage industries gave way to large heavily mechanised factories.
