Censorship and the Internet

The internet is the largest source of information available. On the internet you can find out what birds are extinct, where to get a tattoo, which religion is right for you and if the latest album by your favorite artist is worth buying. You can also see graphic images of lesbian sex, photographs of bloody tragic deaths, plans on how to build bombs, and learn how to lure little boys into your car so you can make love to them. Should all of this info be readily available to everybody that has internet access? Should little children have the right to surf the internet in safety without coming across pictures of male sexual organs and adult sex toys? In this essay I will introduce internet censorship. I will then list the pros and cons of censoring the internet and the groups behind those views. Finally I will provide my opinion followed by a closing statement.

To censor is defined in the dictionary as, “to examine in order to suppress or delete anything considered objectionable.” Censoring the internet would be to remove content which could be considered objectionable. Who would be the judge of this content? The government? The public? With the large amount of material on the internet how woul


Fourteen year-old Johnny is spending the night at his friend’s house and they have ran out of things to do. Johnny decides to get on the internet and look for something to occupy their time. He goes to the ever popular search site, Yahoo, and searches for “young teen fun.” The results take a second to appear and then they pop on to the screen. 19 of the first 20 results are pornographic. Some titles of these results are: Young teen sex fun, pussy castle young teens having fun by the pool and, teenmovievault.com high quality 18+. Suppose Johnny or his friend was to click on one of those results by accident, the young boy would be exposed to pictures of a nude women or man posing in an explicit fashion. This is one of the problems that could be fixed by censoring the internet. Get on the internet and go to www.NAMBLA.org. This site is for the North American Man/Boy Love Association.
