King Tut

King Tutankhamen became the pharaoh of Egypt at the extremely young age of 9, after his father, Akhenaten, died. After becoming pharaoh, King Tut quickly rejected his father’s evil beliefs and ways of running the government, and the young boy had a lot going for him. He should have been king for many years. But, his life was mysteriously cut short at the age of 20. I don’t believe King Tut died of any natural causes or accidents. I believe that King Tut was murdered. The deformations of Tut’s mummy made a possible murder an extremely convincing cause of death. Researchers first narrowed the suspects of murdering the pharaoh down to four close friends and relatives of Tutankhamen. These people were Maya, the treasurer, Horemheb, the commander chief, Ay, the prime minister, and his wife, Ankhesenamen. But, Maya was taken off the list of suspects when he was known to have put a lot of effort and grief into Tut’s burial, and was very careful about destroying written records of Tut’s tomb location to avoid tomb robbery. This means that there were four obvious clues that led me to believe that King Tut’s death was a plotted murder. Tut’s deformations, and his three suspects, Horemheb, Ankhesenamen, and Ay.

The first suspect of murder is the kingdoms commander in chief, Horemheb. Horemheb had spent a lot of time with Tut during his life, teaching him how to hunt, drive chariots, and more. Because of all of the time spent with Tutankhamen, Horemheb was able to pick up a lot of information on Tut, and Tut trusted Horemheb. The activities that they did together constantly made Horemheb aware of Tut’s Klippel-Feil syndrome. These activities also made it easy to plot an “accidental” murder. When scientists found Tut’s body, they did notice that his bandages were sealed together with his unguents. This makes it believable that Horemheb killed Tut on the road and brought his body back slightly decomposed, and used the extra unguents on the bandages. But, Horemheb needed a motive for killing Tut. The only motive that researchers were able to come up with was that Horemheb wanted to assume Tut’s throne himself, which would have been easy with Horemheb’s army behind him. It is possible that as Tut got older, he started making his own decisions in the government, and Horemheb felt threatened and disagreed with some of Tut’s decisions. But, if this was so, then Horemheb wouldn’t have stopped with Tut’s murder. He could have, and would have assumed the throne, but he did not. He kept his position as army chief. Greg Cooper, a former FBI profiler and chief of police in Provo, Utah quotes, “If Horemheb wanted the Pharaohship, he could have taken it.”

This makes him a less convincing suspect.

Ay is the final suspect in the supposed murder of King Tut. He is also the most convincing suspect, with the most convincing motive as well. He was the prime minister who served as king while Tutankhamen was a young boy and unable to make his own decisions. While advising Tut, Ay won Tut’s trust at a very young age. But, if it weren’t for Tutankhamen, Ay automatically would have taken the throne himself after
