A rose For Emily
William Faulkner’s purpose in writing the short story “A Rose For Emily” is to show the readers that the time era in the story has a serious effect on people’s lives. Miss Emily’s life was a prime example of this statement. Her Freedom when her father was alive, her youth, and her unbounded freedom after her father died. In the first part of the story, before the American Civil war around the 1890’s, he leads you to believe that Miss Emily and her family are rich and have a high status. “A big frame house, which was set on what had once been the most select street”. She and her father had very high expectations for a proper husband for her. No one was good enough. “So when she got to be thirty and was still single, we were not pleased exactly, but vindicated; even with insanity in the family she wouldn’t have turned down
all of her chances if they had really materialized. This had a great effect on Miss Emily’s life because back in the 1890’s a person, especially upper class couldn’t just fall in love with anyone and get married: they had to be the same status. In conclusion, I think William Faulkner did a good job in showing the time era in which they lived, had a huge effect on people’s lives, their freedom, sanity and happiness. In the past they had pretty extreme ways and rules of living. There’s no way today someone would be able to get away with murder because their lover would not marry them. Hopefully, one day we will be able to stop judging people by their social status and start judging them on who they are as a person.
