Surfing

Just a couple of weeks ago hurricane Isabel skirted the shoreline of Florida by about three hundred miles. During the entire week, Isabel had been producing perfect six to ten foot swells up and down the coast, making surf conditions that seemed to be plucked directly out of a dream. During this week hurricane Isabel graced us with her presence I came to realize just how much I enjoy the sport of surfing.
One reason that surfing is my favorite sport is because, unlike the other sports I do, such as skateboarding and snowboarding, every time you go surfing it's always different. No two beaches break the same, no two storms send the same waves, no two sets of waves are the same, no two waves in the entire ocean are ever the same, and the sport is always changing. No matter how good you get at surfing, and no matter how much or how long you have done it, there's always something new to try, there is always another place to surf that you have never been and there will always be waves that you have yet to surf.
Another aspect of surfing that I particularly like is that it's a noncompetitive sport, for the most part. It's something that I can go out and do with all of my friends, and we can all have fun no matter who is better or worse at it, because everyone can have fun no matter what their skill level is, and there are no winners or losers like in other sports such as baseball, football or basketball.
Surfing also is one of my favorite sports because it allows you to test yourself and to push yourself to be more motivated. If you go out into the water and it's not necessarily the best conditions but you made it out you"re happy with yourself, but it's not enough. So with this in mind you keep pushing yourself until you get an awesome ride to make it all worthwhile. This pushing me to be motivated also helps with other aspects, such as schooling or work, it makes me not want to give up until I have made whatever it was worth my while.
