Grant and Jefferson is a hero

Helping a person is easy, but being a person’s hero is not that easy. To most people, a hero is a person that helps and makes a difference in others’ life. To make a difference in a person life is very difficult to accomplish. There are those that have made a huge difference in a person’s life and are consider being heroes without even knowing he’s a hero. In the novel, A Lesson Before Dying, Ernest Gaines makes Grant, a character in the novel; give a definition of what is a hero in chapter 24. According to Grant, “ A hero is someone who does something for other people. He does something that other men don’t and can’t do. He is different from other men. He is above other men. No matter who those men are, the hero, no matter who he is, is above them… A hero does for others. He would do anything for people he loves, because he knows it would make their lives better.” Therefore, base on Grant’s definition of a hero, both Grant and Jefferson, is a hero in the novel.

If you love someone deep enough, you will go anywhere and do anything with that person. Therefore, Vivian can’t completely be termed a hero because her love for Grant was not enough. On the other hand, Reverend Ambrose will definitely not count as a hero. He was supposed to be there to help Jefferson, but instead, he didn’t help Jefferson at all. Instead of helping Jefferson, he was only there to give support to Miss Emma. The method he used was asking Grant to tell Jefferson to kneel down before the chair. A hero would never ask someone else to do his work for him.

Both Grant and Jefferson is a hero to each other. Grant is there to help Jefferson realize he’s a man and not a hog. He’s there to help Jefferson die like a man and do it for the people he loves. After he dies, people that love him will remember him as man and not a hog. By dying like a man, he will prove that he is a bigger person than anyone in the plantation because he died with dignity. On the other hand, Jefferson is there to help Grant find himself. Grant is lost in his own world. He doesn’t know where to go or what to do. He needs a sign or an answer to show him what to do. Grant believes that if Jef
