Title IX

High school and college sports have changed over the years. Starting back in the nineteenth century intercollegiate sports have become a symbol of modern American society. Today men’s collegian sports are under siege. Since the civil rights movements of the 1960’s women’s rights activists have fought for something called Title IX. Title IX forces any school or institution that receives federal funding to spend equal amounts of money on both gendered sports.

For instance, if you have a girl’s basketball team that is really popular and brings in a lot of ticket revenues they have to split that money and give half of it to guy sports. This doesn’t seem to make much sense. These girls and their coach have worked so hard to have a good team; shouldn’t the money they make go back into the program, towards New jerseys or facilities? Lets face it not all teams can make money because they just don’t have enough public interest. It would be better if the teams that couldn’t afford themselves to just become clubs. Clubs receive minimal funding and usually do a lot of fundraisers for their cause. Doing something you enjoy, and want to have as a hobby, but doesn’t have enough public interest to allow some

These are some cold hard facts to consider. Think of all the exceptional athletes that have given their all to the sport of wrestling. These young men have bled and some have died for a spot on an N.C.A.A. team. A few wrestlers die every year from cutting weight, and training to hard. That is the predicament that Title IX has put the sport in. Unless you’re the best of the best, there is not a future for you in the sport of wrestling. The sport of wrestling at the college level has been nearly destroyed. The problem is not that college wrestling can not be self sustaining, the problems come to pass when they need to add another women’s sport. Where will these funds come from? Whatever happened to the rights of male sports? Were they just lost in the storm of the feminist movement? Title IX was supposed to spread equality across America. It has conversely given women a free ride to any college, a swaggering attitude, and freedom to say whatever they like. It has really ruined the chance for any kind of equality. Equality between men and women is a great idea, although it looks wonderful on paper, there is no chance it can ever happen in the real world. I thought that America was against communism, now they are giving women and minorities everything, for being nothing but women and minorities. Instead of Title IX spreading equality, it has done nothing more than created a paradox in our beliefs.

“I'm speaking for the other 99 percent of the women's programs throughout the country,'' Auriemma said. ''Unfortunately, the majority of women's programs at the University of Connecticut rely on football revenue for scholarships, travel and recruiting.”(Hack)

Among the concerns is a balance students will need to strike between their studies and holding a job to help pay for the increased cost of their education. Murray constantly hears from faculty members about students working too many hours, he said. (Sanchez)
