Managment as A Profession

The profession that I chose to investigate is management. Although there are many areas of management, they all share some common tasks. However, for this assignment, the position Division Manager for the City of Houston will be my direct topic.

Some of the tasks associated with this position are monitoring the customer contact aspect of the Convention Center. This includes planning, monitoring, directing, controlling and managing any event coordination. This position is also directly responsible for security, crowd control, and audio/visual vendors and outside contractor service functions. The division manager to the Convention Center must also maintain the facilities reputation for service and reduce liabilities and risks by hiring and supervising security contractors. The manager is also responsible for on-site supervision for convention events. This position also requires plan, organized and assign all day-to-day work assignments to staff. The list goes on but these are just a few of the major tasks (City of Houston job posting).

The tasks that appeal to me the most are the responsibilities related to planning and coordinating events. I am most drawn to that particular area because it seems to be an area where c


The time it takes to earn any type of degree depends on the course load of an individual student. Of course, if the student is part-time, it will take a longer period to earn credits as oppose to a full-time student.

For next semester, I hope to take English 1301, Oral Communication, Math 1314, and American History.

The only thing that I find negative, if you can call it that, is that the position requires long and late hours. I have young children and this might prove to be a problem.

The salary information that can be expected from this position varies. The minimum to midpoint salary range is $47,580 - $66,612. The maximum salary range wasn’t available because it the maximum salary is contingent on yearly evaluation and advancement is the position (City of Houston).

I’m excited to know that most of the information that I gathered is very doable. It is by no means easy. But I think it’s within my reach. It also fascinates me. I want to know more about different positions and careers because of investigating this one. I have a more determined mind and attitude regarding success. I no longer want to merely earn money, but I want to have a career that I actually enjoy. I discovered that I could apply for other positions outside of my chosen field to get experience and knowledge about different things.
