Ramleela in essence is a play depicting a little over fourteen years in the life of Sri Ram. The Leela (play) shows us the adversities that Sri Ram encountered in that chapter of his life.
The Ramleela is taken from the Rama-charitramanas or Ramayan. Valmiki wrote the Ramayan in Sanskrit and then by Tulsidas in Hindi. Valmiki was said to have gotten the information about the life of Sri Ram directly from Lord Shiva.
Ramleela takes place annually during the Nav Raatri period (Sept-Oct). The play usually lasts ten days. During the ten-day period many persons, both Hindus and non-Hindus, visit the Ramleela site to observe the play.
