Uncle Tom
Harriet Beecher Stowe and Mark Twain are authors of two renownedanti-slavery novels. Critics have classified these two books, Uncle Tom’s Cabin and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, and their characters as offensive racial stereotypes. I believe Stowe has shown Tom as a heroic slave. I consider Mark Twain’s character, Jim, being portrayed in demeaning ways. I feel Harriet Beecher Stowe has portrayed Tom from Uncle Tom’s Cabin as a heroic slave. Tom was a very strong, intelligent man. He was the ideal slave of everyone. He was taught to read and write by his master’s son, George Shelby. (1006) Master Shelby and his wife had great respect for Tom. Tom highly regarded his masters. It is shown when Eliza wanted to run away with Tom after he found out he was being sold, but Tom didn’t go. “No, no--I an’t going. Let Eliza go -- it’s her right!
