The structure of unemployment in Germany

The high unemployment rate is a huge problem in Germany.

While till the middle of the 70s there was nearly full employment, 1975 the number of people who where unemployed increased up to 4.8%.

From 1980 to 1984 the unemployment rate increased rapidly up to 9.1%, that means around 1.8 million people.

Till 1990 it decreased to 6.5%, but then rose again to over 10% in 1996.

To 2000 it sank below 9%, but the number of unemployed people increased again over 10%

In case of unemployment there are great differences between the different age groups.

In the year 1998, just 3% of the people below 20 are unemployed, whereas 9.5% of the 20-29 year old people have no work.

At the age group 30-39 around 13% are unemployed.

Nearly no differences can be seen between the age groups 40- 44, 45-49 and 50- 54, all are at around 10% of the unemployed.

The highest unemployment rate has the age group from 55-59 with 20%

Of the 60-64 year old people, just around 3% are unemployed.
