Hamlet

In Shakespeare’s Hamlet, King Claudius is one of the most controversial characters. There are many sides to this character that are overlooked that make him out to be just a villain. There is Claudius the father, the husband, the ruler and the human being himself.

Claudius the father never had a problem stating his feelings about Hamlet in front of a crowd. He would stand up and say that he feels the same about Hamlet as his father felt. In reality however, Claudius was the one who killed his father. It seems, in the play, as if Claudius has no problem talking to Hamlet in front of a crowd, but in private he can’t seem to find words to speak. This could be due to his guilt from killing his father and taking the thrown all in the matter of a short period of time. Although this makes him seem like a villain there are other parts that people do not recognize that may change their opinion.

Claudius the husband is not a very clear or understandable part of him. There isn’t much we know about Claudius’ and Gertrude’s private life but that of what Hamlet reveals. Claudius compared to the rest of the characters doesn’t go through many drastic changes. He is a strong influential character throughout the entire play. Claudius has a very significant role in the play. Claudius is the reason for the conflict by killing King Hamlet. He also is the main character in rising of the play by plotting for the murder of Hamlet. The climax is of Claudius asking forgiveness so he would not be murdered. However Claudius causes the murder of Gertrude and himself, which eventually led to the ending of the play.

Claudius the villain was a very complexed character. He carefully planned out the murders but were carried out wrong. In the matter of 3 weeks he went from a nobody to being the king. So from our point of view we should hate Claudius because of his murderous ways. Claudius hid his true feelings however very well. His only slip up was that in the mouse trap that led to the downfall of the kingdom. He also was a control freak. Everything he did he had to be in control of. This is the reason behind most of the conflict. Claudius needed to be in control so he killed King Hamlet. Hamlet was becoming a threat to him so he plotted to have him killed. Everything ties into Claudius needing control over everything.

Despite Claudius’ actions there are sim
