In my examination of Flannery O’Connor’s “A Good Man is Hard to Find,” I discovered that there are several individuals that have to share the responsibility for the dreadful outcome. Not only are these people blameworthy, but a couple of them are very manipulative as well. This short story by Flannery O’Connor starts out as a rather good read and ends up being a shocking story that leaves me quite annoyed. Whereas almost everyone involved in the tale is culpable, I find the Misfit to be the most reprehensible because he is a serial killer, he preys on people, and he has no repentance. The Misfit has a very callous nature and he is obviously the ringleader of the escapees that devastate this Southern family.

The Misfit is not only a murderer but he takes great pleasure in mistreating people. He believes that there is no delight in life except when being mean and cruel to others. The other characters are full of flaws and are wrong in their ways also, but the Misfit is coldhearted and strange despite supposedly coming from a good family.
At no time are apologies given by the Misfit. He does not appear to be remotely sorry for his actions. In fact, he said he dubbed himself the Misfit because he didn’t think that his punishments seem to fit his crimes. This gives the impression that the Misfit is not regretful, but he just doesn’t want harsh sentence. The Misfit apparently has a fall from grace at some point in his life because he has prior experience singing in a gospel choir and obviously at one point has a relationship with the Lord.
