Knowledge is a gift that separates the human race from the wild. It makes us feel superior and in control of our world. Without knowledge, we are still wild. Stevens uses the wild to represent humanity without knowledge. Human nature gives us the need to always learn and grow. “It made the slovenly wilderness Surround that hill.” When the jar was placed on a hill in Tennessee, the wilderness surrounded the hill. ctually grow is usually taken for granted. We are always learning, whether it is a new trade for a job or how to be a better parent. Skills for a job, formal education, and social skills are all a part of what helps our mind grow and set us apart from the wild.

“It took dominion everywhere.” Knowledge controls us all. It is what chooses our direction in life, and it can determine if we fail or succeed. “The jar was gray and bare.” When a teacher educates his students to the best of his ability, he has done all he can. It would then be the students choice rather to give back to society or let their education dissipate. Once the wild was tamed, the jar was empty. “It did not give back of bird or bush, Like nothing else in Tennessee.” We cannot directly repay those that taught us the valuable things that led us to where we are today, except by continuing to use the acquired knowledge to better our own lives. The best way to give back to those who taught us is by teaching others.
