The Scarlet Letter

“Thou shall not Commit Adultery” is written in stone on the Ten Commandments and those who commit this dreadful sin shall suffer the consequences. Nathaniel Hawthorne, who was born in 1804 on Independence Day, and a descendent of the Puritans were strong believers of this mortal sin, and are well aware of the consequences that are placed upon the desperate souls who dare commit this unforgivable sin. The literary sensation “The Scarlet Letter” written in 1850, by Hawthorne was a descriptive novel that takes back the reader to time where Puritans governed the land and sin was not tolerated, especially the hellish sin called adultery. Anyone who commits this unspeakable crime would be put on a pedestal of shame in front of the whole community. That they would be looked on as an outcast, a devil amongst angels, and would carry a burden that only God himself could remove from their soul. Hester Prynne was the poor soul who fell victim to this sin of unforgiveness and paid dearly for her acts of passion, but Hester was not alone in this act of sin. Hester Prynne had a significant other whose name was kept secret, because of the high social status he held in the community. His name was the good reveren

Finally, it was this dark secret that killed him slowly and painfully. Dimmesdale carried this burdened for seven long years becoming weaker and weaker though the novel. Dimesdale knowing that he was to blame became very ill and constantly hold his chest as if the truth were burning his soul. No one knew why reverend Dimmesdale was becoming so ill. After all man well taken care of the way Dimmesdale was doesn’t become sick for no apparent reason. Well there was a reason, a dark reason, Dimmesdale knowing that he was he father of little pearl, the committer of adultery, and that he rests the blame solely on the shoulders of Hester seemed to have blackened his soul. Although his social status stayed intact this grim secret ruined him spiritually.

In the end when Mr. Dimmesdale revealed his secret, it sort of released Hester and little Pearl of their demons. Hester now would be able to live her life without the burden of carrying the A on her chest, and little Pearl would no longer be called a devil child. Now the Puritans community could see that anyone was capable of committing sins such as adultery, even if they were of well social status and power. Look to the one who is least capable is what I always say and if the Puritans thought this to they would have found the good Reverend Dimmesdale to be a liar and a sinner.

It seemed as if this secret burned the same letter A that Hester wore on her clothes into his chest and this was why he was constantly grabbing at. This secret took its toll on the Reverend Dimmesdale killing him in the end. He had to answer to God now why he lied about what he did and let’s hope for his sake God was mer
