Suspense in Hamlet
One of the most widely known plays in Englishliterature is Hamlet by William Shakespeare. The young prince, Hamlet, is heir to the thrown of Denmark, but is betrayed by his uncle and his own mother. Hamlet’s uncle Claudius kills his father and then marries his mother. As the play proceeds, Hamlet’s primary goal is to gain the honor he feels his dead father deserves, which is to kill his father’s murderer. Through out the play, Hamlet carefully and cleverly conjures ways to seek revenge on Claudius. Though, until Hamlet’s speech, “How all occasions …my thoughts be bloody or nothing worth!” his plans are simply fleeting not meaningful until he was inspired by the bravery and action of millions of fighting men.
