The Great Gatsby vs. Winter Dreams
The twenties were an amazing time full of hopes, dreams, and for the wealthy parties. Many of the great writers of our time emerged from this area of excitement; perhaps one of the most prominent of these writers was F. Scott Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald led a life much like that of other young men in his time. He grew up in a household where money was not something that was of great abundance. However, as he grew older he managed to pull himself up and achieve for himself the American dream of rags to riches. He had made himself such a wealthy and famous man through his talent in writing novels and short stories. One of his most famous novels was The Great Gatsby. This book, like most of Fitzgerald’s writing, was modeled after the events in his personal life. The Great Gatsby is a story of love and betrayal, lust and infidelity, all of which were the foundation of the twenties. Much like the other authors of his time, all of Fitzgerald’s works had a similar theme while still each maintaining its own uniqueness. Within the short story Winter Dreams, by Fitzgerald, there were many of the same themes as that in The Great Gatsby such as infidelity as well as similarities between the characters. As w
Probably the most eminent similarity between The Great Gatsby and Winter Dreams was the theme of infidelity. There were perhaps more occurrences of disloyalty in the story than any other action taken place by the characters. Infidelity occurred in the case of daisy and her husband Tom. Both tom and daisy were unfaithful to their mates. Daisy was cheating on Tom with Gatsby and Tom was cheating on Daisy with myrtle who herself was also married. It seems as though the bonds of marriage seemed to mean nothing to the couples. While attending one of Gatsby’s parties, daisy noticed that her husband, Tom, observing a few young ladies. Upon this realization daisy decided to encourage this behavior as well as offer some assistance. She said, “ go ahead, and if you want to take down any addresses here is my little gold pencil…” in the case of Dexter and Judy both seemed to have their struggles with being faithful. One day Dexter and Judy had gone to a supper picnic together and after the supper it was said that, “ She took him in her roadster to a picnic supper, and after supper she disappeared, likewise in her roadster, with another man.” The idea of infidelity seemed to never end; daisy especially seemed to have trouble figuring out whom she in truth loved and whom she wanted to be with. Even when she was sue that she had made her decision to be with Gatsby, at the end of the novel she disappeared from her home and it seems that she now decided to stay with Tom and leave Gatsby behind. Through infidelity and character development, Fitzgerald brings together each of his stories and makes them come to life. Each with its own uniqueness delves into the life of the twenties as well as the life of Fitzgerald himself. Between the lines of each page lies the truth of hi
