In this essay I will analyze the sculpture, The Thinker and debate to see if it is a beast or a god or somewhere in between the two. Alexander Pope writes in his essay on man “In doubt to deem himself a god, or beast”. When your first look at the sculpture you think that it’s a human being. But how did humans get to where they are today. There are two main hypothesis on how man was created. The first is a higher power, God created the earth and all its living things in a week. Another hypothesis, developed by Darwin states that human beings evolved from apes.
To say that the world was created in a week seems kind of hard to believe but many people believe this. I think that God created the earth and all the living things except for humans. There is just not enough scientific proof for me to believe that he created humans.
When you look at the sculpture, The Thinker, you begin to see the detail, color and pose . The detail is very distinct. You can see the lines in the arms and legs which show how muscular the figure sculptured is. This raw power looks to be more of a beast or savage than human. Power can also could be god like in the way that there is nothing that could kill it and therefore it is immortal.
Darwin’s theory is that we evolved from apes over millions of years. This is who we are today. But to this day we hadn’t been able to find the missing link between apes and humans. Darwin’s theory believes we came from apes because there are a lot of similarities between us.
