Nat Turner, born October 2, 1800, died August 1831. November 1st the date of the confession of Nat Turner. Nat Turner was the property of Benjamin Turner, slave owner.

During the confession that Nat Turner gave of his free will he spoke about situation that occurred before he was born. His parents and other folks were amazed that he knew so much about life at such an early age. Nat was approximately three or four years old when he spoke of these things that he could have never known at that time. Some believed that he was told about these things from his parents or his master, but he wasn’t. Others believed that he was a godly man or a prophet that God had sent to them. His parents believed because of his intelligence and knowledge at such a young age that he had a profound purpose on this earth.

Nat had strange marks on his head and breast that Negroes (African American) in those times only few had, so his parents believed that those marking meant something special or he had a great purpose for his life.

His parents and master were extremely amazed of this young person and the level of intelligence that he held. His master knew he would be no good serving him as a slave. Everyone knew that he was too intelligent for that, but it amazed me that his master didn’t keep close watch on his every move. Back in those days masters were afraid of black intelligent slaves. They were fearful that they would teach them to read and write while encouraging them to stand up for themselves and overtake their masters. Black and whites were too amazed of Nat’s intelligent level and wanted him to be around them to help in anyway he could. Nat became quite interested in the Bible and wanted to learn more about the scriptures. He started reading scriptures focusing on them trying to find out what they truly meant to him.
