In June of 1933, Vernon Presley married Gladys Smith. On January 8, 1935, two years into the marriage, Gladys gave birth to identical twin sons. While the first, Jesse Garron, arrived stillborn, the second, Elvis Aron, came into this world alive and healthy. Elvis grew up in a close knit family consisting of parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Growing up, Elvis enjoyed showcasing his musical talent by strumming on a guitar and being in front of an audience, consisting only of family members at that time.

The summer of 1953 would forever change the electrician’s life. Elvis wanted to hear what his voice would sound like on record because he had aspirations of becoming a singer. Elvis went to Memphis Recording Service and made a two-demo acetated of the songs “My Happiness” and “That’s When Your Heartache Begins.” The acetate cost $4.00. After finishing, Elvis took the acetate home to his mother as a belated birthday gift. Elvis’s talent impressed Marion Keisker, a secretary at the recording studio. Marion gave one of the demos to the owner of Sun Label, Sam Phillips, who became intrigued by the young artist. Same called Elvis into the studio to sing a song that Sam hoped to be put on a record, but Elvis could not sing “Without You” to Sam’s liking. Sam also had Elvis sing a number of other popular tunes. Sam then teamed up Elvis with local musicians to record something worth selling.

Elvis graduated from L.C. Humes High School in 1953. During his high school career, Elvis worked many jobs to support his family and himself. After graduation Elvis worked at Parker Machinists shop, attended night classed to become an electrician, and then changed employers working for
