This terminology came from the Greek legend named Narcissus. Narcissus was a hero that was of lovely youth. His loveliness attracted all the girls. Even though he was a very popular fellow, he did not go for these girls that wished to be his. The most beautiful and ones who tried their hardest to make him look at them did not even phase him. In this myth, it decribes that Zephyr, the West Wind, caused the death, not Apollo. Zephyr loved the beautiful youths, which caused him to blow the discus that killed Hyacinthus due to jealousy upon him. This myth also describes Apollo’s dearest companion, Hyacinthus. He was horror-struck to see his youth lad die right before his eyes. He was even more upset because he killed his companion, but it was only by accident. Apollo grieved, “If I could give my life for yours, or die with you.” As he said this, the grass that just was red from Hyacinthus’s blood, then turned green again right before his eyes. Then the beautiful flower, hyancinth, bloomed to remember the young lad forever.
