Women in Professional Golf
For about one hundred years the Professional Golfers Association has been holding golf tournaments for the best golfers in the world to showcase themselves. For about one hundred years now the PGA has been with one or two exceptions has ben strictly open to males, but all this changed on May 22, 2003 when Annika Soerstam arrived for the qualifying round of the Colonial Invitational in Fort Worth, Texas. The PGA tour is a World Wide golfing organization founded by and for the best male golfers in the world, recently Annika Sorestam was awarded a sponsors exemption to play in the Colonial Invitational, allowing any woman in any male’s professional sport is wrong because males can not play in woman’s professional sports so they should play in the leagues designated for them. For many years now the question of weather or not woman should be aloud to play in men’s professional sports has come up all of the country. When Bernard Chapin of the Men’s News Daily was asked this question he said, “We are conditioned in our society to accept discrimination against men yet to be outrages every time a woman or woman’s organization hears to word no.”(Bernard 1). To paraphrase what PGA tour member Vijah Sinhg said when asked to
The most obvious reason that men and woman should not play in the same events as each other is that men are bigger and stronger so they have the advantage over smaller weaker woman. Let me clarify my position that weaker is not a derogatory comment it is just fact that I will now demonstrate. The leading driver for the 2003 season of the PGA Tour was Hank Kuenne at 321.4 yards per drive. The leading drive in distance for the 2003 LPGA tour was Annaka Sorenstam 271.1 yards per drive. In this instance this is an apples to apples comparison. Mr. Kuenne and Ms. Sorenstam have the accesses to the same equipment, drivers and balls, this clearly shows the difference is strength and ability of the male golfer. Glen Hnatiuk a member of the PGA Tour averaged 271.1 and was ranked 181st in driving distance for the 2003 season, this is were Ms. Sorenstam would fall into place. Only 144 players are invited to play in tournaments a week. To make my point even further the leading driver for the Champions tour, a tour for men 50 years and older, was Rodger Davis at 313.2 yards per drive. On this tour for senior citizens Ms. Sorenstam would be ranked along with Hale Irwin who averages 265.2 yards per drive and is nearly twice her age at 58 years old. These statistics clearly show that she cannot compete with men at any age when it comes to the most fundamental part of golf. Driving the ball. If a tour player who made 1.9 million dollars a year or less than that, which would make a below average player on the PGA tour, decided he wanted to play on the LPGA tour instead of playing on the PGA he would be able to with out much of a challenge. This is true because the courses woman play on are much shorter and less difficult then tho
