99 Luftballoons (99 Red Balloons) Analysis
“99 Red Balloons” by German artist Nena is song from the 1980’s that exemplifies the continual paranoia caused by political tension. At that period, that world was roughly 40 years into the Cold War between democratic capitalism, led by the United States and totalitarian communism, led by the Soviet Union. The first stanza of the song begins with an innocent trip to a toy store to buy 99 red balloons. The speaker sets the balloons free at the break of dawn until she has none left. Balloons are set free all the time, which make her actions seem normal, except for maybe the large number she released, but her actions did have unexpected consequences. The last half of the first stanza completely reverses the blithe mood established by the beginning lines. Back at a military base, “bugs in the software” accidentally recognize the multitude of red balloons as some f
orm of an attack. “It’s red alert” in the following stanza is the first demonstration of the extreme paranoia caused by the ongoing Cold War. The balloons are immediately identified as foreign objects, and with “an eager eye” the “war machine springs to life.” The eagerness of the government to attack shows how they were losing their patience after this 40-year war. Both sides in the Cold War wanted their opponent defeated, but because both leading countries were well supplied in nuclear warheads, they refrained from striking first. In the third stanza, we learn that all the ministers have to meet to make decisions as they worry about the supposed attack. The troops are brought in a hurry to defend their nation while the president “is on the line.” All of this occurs over a mistake in the radar, but because of all panic and haste, no one has bother
