Theodore Thomas

In 1859, at age twenty-four, after conducting his first two concerts, Theodore Thomas had this to say about his future work, “I planned to devote my energies to the cultivation of instrumental music.” In the proceeding years, he had progressed from a violinist, to a concert master, to a soloist, and then to a chamber player. In the last thirteen years of his life after settling in Chicago, he made both his greatest historical contribution and accomplished his life’s goal in the founding of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and in finding a permanent home for his orchestra. In the forty-some years between the time he was a musician, and the time when he permanently came to Chicago, he was developing as a conductor and a builder of orchestras. Theodore Thomas is remembered in history for introducing the public to classical music in the United States through his work as a conductor, and a builder of orchestras.

On October 11, 1835, Theodore Thomas was born in Esens, East Friesland Germany. Starting at an early age, his father, who was the town’s musician, taught him to play the violin. At the age of six, he played publicly for the first time. When he was ten, the Thomas family moved to New York,

From his mid twenties, when he ended his career as a musician, to the time when he came to Chicago in his mid sixties, he learned the skills as a conductor and a builder of orchestras. At age 28, Thomas became an Orchestra conductor and organized an orchestra of his own, called the Theodore Thomas Orchestra. With his orchestra, he toured throughout the United States. The selections that were played by his orchestra included both modern and classical music, which he was trying to introduce to America. In addition to his orchestra, he was the alternate conductor of the Brooklyn Philharmonic Society. Four years later he became solo conductor. On October 9, 1871, the Thomas Orchestra was scheduled to hold a concert at the Crosby Opera House. Two days before the first concert, the Chicago Fire broke out and the Crosby Opera House was destroyed. The Thomas Orchestra lost a great deal of money, because they had no place to play. In June 1877, the New York Philharmonic Society hired Thomas to be the conductor of the Philharmonic Orchestra in New York. The Society let him continue to conduct his orchestra. One of the things that Thomas did, as well as his work of conducting, was the founding of the Cincinnati College of Music, where he was the president from 1878 to 1880. During this time, he gave up his work as an Orchestra conductor to work at this college. Thomas was not a success at this school. He resigned
