Dracula today has no relation with the actual, historical Dracula that Bram Stoker used as the source for his Dracula. Stoker used Vlad III Dracula, a fifteenth century Wallachian prince, to model his Dracula. It is unclear why Vlad was chosen, but it is likely that he was because of his name. Dracula in Romanian can mean two things: son of the devil or son of the dragon. “Dracul” literally translates to “the devil”. The “ula” ending translates “to the son of”. Vlad’s father was known and Vlad Dracul. However, it is not known whether their names referred to the dragon or to the devil. While that is the most widely accepted reason, it is plausible that Bram Stoker used Vlad III as his model because of Vlad’s cruel history. Vlad III was also known as Vlad the Impaler.
