Who is Dracula? Today, the expected answer to that question is that Dracula is the father of vampires, the head vampire, or one of the most powerful vampires. While that may be valid in some significance to Bram Stoker’s novel Dracula, it has strayed from the novel’s theme so much that Dracula today is no more than a Halloween costume. When comparing Bram Stoker’s Dracula, Dracula historically, and Dracula today, their differences surface and we can understand why Stoker’s Dracula has become the most popular classic ever written. Dracula is known all over the world. The novel has been translated into many languages. However, he is no longer remembered-especially in the West-for the same reasons that made Stoker’s novel popular. It has been made into over 200 movies and shows. Dracula today has no relation with the actual, historical Dracula that Bram Stoker used as the source for his Dracula. Stoker used Vlad III Dracula, a fifteenth century Wallachian prince, to model his Dracula. It is unclear why Vlad was chosen, but it is likely that he was because of his name. Dracula in Romanian can mean two things: son of the devil or son of the dragon. “Dracul” literally translates to “the devil”. The “ula” ending translates “to the son of”. Vlad’s father was known and Vlad Dracul. However, it is not known whether their names referred to the dragon or to the devil. While that is the most widely accepted reason, it is plausible that Bram Stoker used Vlad III as his model because of Vlad’s cruel history. Vlad III was also known as Vlad the Impaler.
