Hamlet is also a play about watching plays. Looking at other people watching the play corresponds to reality in theatrical performance. Hamlet's tactics of meta-theatricality places the play versus being, with the focus on interpretation and mirroring. The mirror technique consist of the simple idea of watching the reflection of the reality: audience watching themselves has to respond to the actions on stage. As the performance keeps changing due to different subjects and moods, audience will react unconsciously in accordance to these modifications. Hamlet puts on a play called The Mousetrap that he has written for Claudius and Gertrude, but he presents it as well for other attendants in the castle in order to catch the moment where the representation of the reality will find its reference in the reaction of Claudius. When Hamlet gives instruction to the players how to organize the performance, he exposes the purpose of the play: "…to hold/ as 'twere, the mirror up to nature;'' (III; 1; 22-3). The plot of this sub-play closely interprets the actual murder of his father, and it functions to trap Claudius into revealing his guilt. Hamlet is looking for the sign of confusion that will eliminate the distance between the stage and reality and, consequently, between the seeming and the being.
