No News is Private News

“I did not have sexual relations with that woman, Ms. Lewinsky. (Clinton)” When someone thinks of President Clinton and his most famous quote, that one certainly comes to mind. While his affair brought controversy to a successful Presidency, the public was entitled to learn of the actions of their most important elected official. From the minute I learned of the Mayor’s affair, I considered my two options. I could do the easy thing and not publish the newly found facts, or I could create controversy among the town and publish the affair of the Mayor. After very little debate, there was no question in my mind that the news had to be reported. As a reporter I am ethically required to report the news I learn and let the readers decide for themselves how important the information is.

I will act in such a way, because it would be a travesty if we lived in a world where the negative actions of our leaders were shielded from the public’s eyes. It is not my decision to determine whether or not the Mayor should be forgiven, it is the publics; however, it is my responsibility to make the town aware of the long standing affair that the Mayor has taken part in. In the case of President Clinton, he

was forgiven for his actions by many and was allowed to continue on with his Presidency. In fact, many consider him one of the greatest Presidents in recent history. “When I think about former President Clinton, sure the affair comes to mind, but when all is said and done, he was one of the greatest Presidents in our history. The positive feats he accomplished for our country far outweigh the mistakes he made in his personal life. (Katz)” While the affair of the Mayor of a small town is not nearly as important as President Clinton’s affair, the members of the town need to determine the appropriate actions they will take. What kind of country would it be if news that could potentially be very important was shielded from the eyes of the public? It all starts with covering up an affair, but then it progresses to not reporting something of slightly more significance, and eventually we will be living in a country where the press shields the public from all the important facts they must consider when they go to elect their public officials.

Knowing that the affair took place with a member of the Mayor’s staff makes this news more important than if it took place with a man from outside her office. In reporting this news, many more questions will be asked of the Mayor and more facts will come out of the investigation. If the man she was having an affair with was given a job over more qualified applicants because he was in a relationship with the Mayor, the public may decide that the Mayor is putting her needs over the needs of the town. The best man or woman should be hired for the job, not the applicant who is sleeping with the Mayor.

In a somewhat of an ignorance is bliss argument, there is a notion that it could be best for the townspeople if they were not to learn of the affair. If a revelation of the events were to be printed, the Mayor’s attention would shift away from her job and focused on a cover up of her affair. The town deserves to have the Mayor’s full concentration on her job at all times. Clearly, the mayor could not do her job to the best of her potential if she were to be bombarded with questions and comments concerning the actions in her personal life. If this information were not printed, the town could go on with their happy lives and the ma
