With historical background and throughout the last decade the issue of weather or not feminism had made a positive impact on society had raged. Although the issues are complex , and the opposition argues that feminism does not provide a positive direction for society for the following reasons. First, negative social change andsecondly, the breakdown of family. These reasons do have merit but I do contend that feminism does provide a positive direction in society for these compelling reasons, one, the upward social change and second, the equality of genders. The United States from pre colony days to the present have progressed through immense changes, the upward social movement as well as the equality of sexes has had an amazing effect on society today.

The Webster's Ninth New Collegiate Dictionary defines feminism as the theory of political economic and social equality of the sexes and the organized activity on behalf of women's rights and interest. One hundred years ago only few women worked outside the home, however presently 75% ( Manchester,pg 2) of women do so. Post World War I the number of women involved in military services and jobs in the community slowly increased. Men being away and at war for so long forced wome

Feminism has not brought women into positive direction . Feminism has played a big part in the break up and breakdown of the nuclear family. Education has been positive for some individuals, however for the majority women it had created a negative interpretation to the female gender. Women need to be educated the same way men are. It had been proven that women in society today haven't necessarily for got about feminism and what it stood for, but treat it as a "fashion thing". It is not the experience that has changed, or the people think the problem is solved, but the idea of inequality has became "old fashion". I feel the values held by citizens of the United States have gone through negative changes. Children are taught how to use foul language by hearing acceptable playground or social language at school and inappropriate things that would have be terminiated at the onset by the mother would have more time to spend with the child, it the child's bad behavior could have been avoided. Our schools drop out rate keeps declining as well as over all deficiencies in students. Children need to be stimulated with positive and wholesome encouragement for their parents more often not form a after school latch-key program for until the late hour of 7 p.m. , in the evening. Whereas 50 years ago we lived with values in areas of loyalty, kindness, sincerity and honesty. These values that american culture was founded on have been set aside and filled with hate ,racial slander sexuality and communication breakups.

It was not until the 1940's till American women became vocal and concerned about their rights, their women's rights. Our nation was changing from an mostly agricultural society. This change made a need for factory workers .Women started to join the workforce out side of home. With workers jobs came an awareness of environment and workers rights. Women realized they had opinions and ideas as well as men. Women's voices only became heard as women became more vocal. Under the United States constitution both genders had rights. Women started realizing and revealing those rights in the workplace and in society. As time passed , men and women became educated. Changes for equal opportunities became a bit more hopeful. Even though change was different in the 40's and the 50's ,change did occur. Women pushed for closer equality in jobs and pay.
