The scene in the novel which I think was the most significant is the scene when Paul killed Gerard Duval. Paul was in shell-hole behind the enemy lines. He had his dagger out waiting to kill anyone who jumps in. Suddenly a French soldier jumps in. Paul then stabs him. They stay in the shell-hole till the morning till Gerard Duval dies. I think this scence was the most significant, because Paul had to look at the face of a dying helpless man for almost 12 hours. Paul then regretted what he had done to the soldier, because he found out he was a father and a husband waiting like Paul to get back home and enjoy a peaceful life.

If Erich Maria Remarque was alive to watch the movie. I do not think he would have been really satisfied.
