Learning a new language in a foreign country

In 1993, I moved to New York from Dominican Republic, which is my native country.

In Dominican Republic Spanish is the primary language and English is secondary, but is not commonly used. I could not speak any English; therefore, school was extremely difficult with English being the primary language. My interpretation of English language was that it sounded backwards and just did not make any sense. I remember times when my dad would get mad at me because I used to watch Spanish channels instead of English channels. He used to say, “ The more you hear English the better you will understand it. Having this job was one of the best things that I have done, I was able to talk and not worry about other people judging my accent.

Boot camp was not as tough as I thought it would be. I was able to communicate with my fellow recruits, which made the experience a lot more enjoyable. In October the navy sent me to school to learn my job, which was extremely difficult. I became the class leader based on my college credit and my rank. My shipmates did not like me, they used to say, “Until you learn to speak English do not talk to us Get lost.” I felt as if language was power; It is so hard for people like myself who have a limited vocabulary; the less one know, the more difficult it is to express how one feels. I did not let that get in my way. I studied even harder and I graduated with the third highe
