Saturday Night Racing
“Brendon continues to search for a line under the 4 car,” the public address announcer roared with excitement as the cars entered turn three at the Cottage Grove Speedway. The drivers of these cars were looking for the white flag to be displayed when they would pass the flagman’s stand. This would signal only one lap to go in the thirty lap feature race. The feature was the main event at the speedway for the evening. It was what packed the stands with fans, and signaled another exciting night of racing in the sprint car division at this quarter-mile dirt track. The stands were filled to capacity with fans yelling and cheering for their favorite driver to win. The two young stars that were battling for position had continued this dogged pursuit from the moment that the green flag dropped to begin this adrenaline rush that we know as sprint car racing. Some of the younger fans could be seen crossing their fingers with sincere hope that their driver would somehow be victorious. As the cars left turn four, the fans rose to their feet to see the action and shout words of encouragement to their favorite driver as they began the last lap. It was then that things went horribly wrong. Brendon, a crowd favorite, came out of turn four a little high, which put him too close to the concrete retaining wall. With everyone in attendance looking on, his car veered sharply to the left; this sent him directly into the path of the car running in third place. They immediately became entangled and were sent cart wheeling down the front stretch of the speedway. One of these lightweight cars became airborne. If not for the retaining fence, the car would have ended up in the stands. It is unimaginable what kind of death and destruction this would have caused. By the time the dust had settled over the speedway, both cars were laying in a heap of scrap metal in turn one. As the fans played this horrible accident over and over in their minds, they wondered what conditions could have caused such a terrible disaster that evening?
