Bront¸ creates the love of Catherine and Heathcliff out of circumstances that they cannot control. Now that isn’t to say that selfishness cannot be controlled, but they are unable to control it because they are not strong enough. Perhaps not having a proper family/living structure affects that because having a helping hand to guide you can always make a difference. But unfortunately, Catherine and Heathcliff have to live a life lacking parents, friends, respect, and support from others. That is their circumstance, which leads to their addiction.

Catherine and Heathcliff are so fixed on their selfishness that if their needs cannot be met, withdrawal from their addiction will occur.
