Past, Present, but Where is the Future?

Past, Present, but Where is the Future?

Confucius says “One hundred women are not worth a single testicle”(handout). A quote men and women alike may smirk at, but in reality could be the cause of how we think of women today. We all know the stereotypes—the forever beautiful, the supermom, the sex kitten, the helpless. Whatever the role, television, film and popular magazines are full of images of women and girls who are typically white, desperately thin, and beautiful. There are even myths about women in religion and in Greek mythology. Since the beginning of time, women have been considered the weak sex, the inferior, helpless, and uneducated. The advertisements in today’s society aren’t helping women get back their power; it is causing women to lose ground on what we are trying to do all along, regain power. The consequence of this is shattering and is causing violence against women, due to the fact that we seek power and class.

In the society today women are portrayed as more than a pretty face or a nice figure. “The press is increasingly responsible for supplying the information and images through which we understand our lives” (Rhode 99). Advertisements have now begun to represent the stereotypical attitudes

And we wonder where we get these stereotypes? The myths haunt us from our past and are articulated in our present. Today we see beautiful models in the magazines we subscribe to monthly, and hear the insults on the television shows we watch weekly. “Magazines that pride themselves on teaching girls beauty tips to hide what they hate ought to stop… and start changing it.” (Higginbotham 99) In this article Higginbotham states that women do not need to cover up what is “wrong” with them, but what is right, and how to love it. All people of all ages are subjugated to hear and see the discrimination against women. One perfect example of how young girls learn how to be a “real women” is playing house as a child. There was always the mom, the baby, and dad that was always at work. Mom and the baby would stay home, making dinner, cleaning, being home schooled, and answering the door when dad came home. It was the dream house, one where the mom took care of everything at home, including dad and all his needs. What kind of lesson is that, teaching the kids that is how life is going to be? “We were at that stage in our childhood when little girls want to be everything special, glamorous and wonderful-and believe they can be” (Gilman 70). When girls are young their mothers teach them that men are the founders of our happiness, and that they will make all the money in the household, and women stay home to cook, clean, and take care of the children. Women need to get rid of these stereotypes just as bad as men need to forget about them.

I think it's time to kill for our women

of women. Now when people think of women they might think of Bitch, whore, prissy, passive, weak, unathletic, inferior, uneducated, or fake. Society and advertisements have bashed not only the portrait of women, but now their character too. So not only do women have to be beautiful, but also nice, smart, powerful, strong, and athletic to be perfect. This traps girls and women into a photograph that is like a fairytale, one that would be nice, but unattainable. We are trapped into this photo that we are supposed to look and act like. A photo that has been around for longer than time can tell.
