Job Outsourcing
More and more American white-collar jobs are being filled or replaced by non-Americans. Where does this leave the American workers? Is this a good thing or a bad thing? About 20 years ago many people lost their auto and manufacturing jobs to outsourcing. This was first believed to be bad for the American nation. As we later found out, this resulted in a strong economic growth. Innovation created better and more jobs to replace the ones lost. So does this mean that outsourcing white-collared jobs will in the long term have the same effect as did outsourcing blue-collar jobs? There are two ways to look at this. The first says that yes, outsourcing is a good thing. Moving well-educated jobs overseas to have people do the same job for far less will create new higher paying jobs for the American workers. The other opinion is no, outsourcing highly skilled jobs is different and poses a larger risk to the economy. But I also believe, as many others do that in order to keep America on top of the world and right there with the next big innovation, there are a few things that have to be done. We have to ensure that we have a broadly educated workforce that keeps learning. Companies have to install training programs at the corporate level that would help current employees move up to better positions. America will have to invest in itself to stay ahead of the rest of the world. One difference between the blue-collared and white-collared jobs is in what it takes to move the job overseas. Most blue-collared jobs are labor intensive, and require billions of dollars to build plants and to set up distribution chains for supply and shipments before moving work offshore. But most white-collared jobs are service jobs. All most service jobs need is desks, computers, and internet access. The cost to move these jobs is far less then moving blue-collared jobs.
